Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Podcasts

Podcasts have exploded in number and quality over the last 10 years. It is not surprising that a few oral and maxillofacial surgery podcasts have appeared as well. Although they are limited in number, the content is typically very good. Profiled here are the three most popular podcasts related to oral surgery. Three may seem like a lot already, but I believe there is room for future podcasts to be developed for each niche of oral surgery. For example, a business and oral surgery podcast would be insightful. Other topics could include starting a practice, fellowship oriented oral surgery (microvascular, cosmetic, TMJ), or academic oral surgery. The podcasts below are general in nature, however they provide valuable insights into the world of oral and maxillofacial surgery. We have interviewed their creators, and we hope you enjoy what they have to say. If you like their content or want to explore further, please make sure to give them a follow on Apple podcasts and Instagram.

Interview

– Drs.…. tell us about yourself. Where you are from, where did you train? Where are you now?

Dr. Patel – I received my Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA in 2013. After finishing my dental training, I went on to my residency in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, NY, where I also served as a chief resident from 2017-2018. I am a diplomate of American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, a member of AAOMS, ADA, and ODA. In addition to being a key member of the team at ClearChoice Dental Implant Center in Cleveland, OH, I operated and taught in level one trauma training centers and worked in private practice along with maintaining a faculty position at several different hospitals in Ohio.

Dr. Akbari- I received my Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA in 2014. After finishing my dental training, I went on to my residency in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, NY, where I also served as a chief resident from 2020-2021. I am currently an attending surgeon at Lincoln Hospital in Bronx, NY, where I operate and teach in level one trauma center.

– How did you get into podcasting?

We first talked about podcasting while we were in residency together at Mount Sinai Hospital. We realized that we needed more versatile method to learning quick information and thought it would be nice to have an OMS podcast like medical world does. Then we asked ourselves, why wait for someone else to make a podcast! We could create our own and thats when we got started with our efforts.

– Favorite or most memorable episode?

There are so many. Our very first episode on Obstructive Sleep Apnea took multiple recordings and editing before it went into production and it has to be one of our favorite. We also love the MRONJ episode we recorded with Dr. Eric Carlson.

– Where do you see the future of your podcast?

We have reached many members of our community through this podcast and we continue to expand. We plan to involve more members in helping make our episodes and bring different topics for more evidence based learning.

– If you could go back and tell yourself one thing as an intern resident what would it be?

Read everyday, stay curious, operate more

– Final question: Maxilla or mandible?

Mandible!!!

Education: DDS from University of Washington

Interview

– Dr. Hwang, tell us about yourself. Where you are from, where did you train/currently in training?

Seattle, WA. I am currently in my OMFS training at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, OR.

– How did you get into podcasting?

I’ve always enjoyed public speaking and creating content to teach others. I thought podcasting was the most time-efficient way for me to speak about a topic once without the need to give the same lecture

– Favorite or most memorable episode?

I really enjoyed my episode with Dr. Dierks. It was genuine. I had admired him since I was a dental student since he was a giant in the field. Sitting across the table from him and causally chatting was something I thought I’d never do. Dr. Dierks was humble throughout the entire interview and was patient to my naive questions, which I definitely appreciated.

– Where do you see the future of your podcast?

Not entirely sure. There is a selfish aspect behind the reason why I podcast. 1) it’s to fulfill my desire to teach and help others because I feel like OMS is so dependent on who you know. By bringing many people onto my show, I can have my listeners connect with various people from around the country to obtain a new perspective. 2) Another selfish reason is that it helps me learn and remember. By focusing with intent during a show, it forces me to actually understand what I am saying by orally delivering in a way that my audience can follow. Where else can I have someone listen to me babble for an hour?

– If you could go back and tell yourself one thing as an intern resident what would it be?

Be present

– Final question: Maxilla or mandible?

Mandible

Thank you again doctors for taking the time to be interviewed! Even more importantly, I would like to thank you for all of your hard work and contributions to the oral surgery community.
