What Are Oral Surgery Program Directors Looking For?

Before attending an interview, or going on an externship, more than likely you have looked up the program director and chair to find out more information about them. Either by reading their published work, hearing from residents, or talking to your faculty at your school, you can get a basic idea of who they are or the kind of culture they promote at their program. Although this is helpful, many times you have no idea of what they are looking for when considering applicants or judging your performance. Some surely put an emphasis on the CBSE, while I bet there are just as many that value work ethic and performance during an externship more. Either way, I stumbled on a slideshow presented by the program director of Ohio State’s OMFS program, Dr. Gregory Ness. Overall, there isn’t much information you haven’t heard before, but there are some good suggestions. Either way, it was nice to see what qualities a director emphasizes in a candidate. It is pretty short with only 15 slides, so it should make for a quick and easy read.
