Program of the Week #1: University of Michigan

In recognition of the oldest oral and maxillofacial training program in the U.S, I am kicking off the featured program of the week with the University of Michigan. Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the program was founded in 1917 by Chalmers J. Lyons.  Dr. Chalmers was renown for his work with cleft lip and palate surgery. Today, this full-scope, six-year program accepts three residents a year.  Dr. Sean P. Edwards serves as head of the program covering the University of Michigan Hospital, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, and the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.

The curriculum begins with residents attending years two and three of the University of Michigan School of Medicine where they will take USMLE Step I and Step II. Following medical school graduation, residents serve 4 months on anesthesia and 13 months on general surgery. The final two and a half years of residency are spent on OMS service. According to the program website, research is encouraged but not required.

For those interested in the program, externships are available on a first come first serve basis for a one-week period.  If you’d like to check out the program, or just Ann Arbor in general, make sure to check out their website for details. Also, Ann Arbor (pop: 117,025) is frequently listed as one of the best places to live making it an enjoyable destination for your six years.
